Waseda University invites UI students to participate in “Developing Innovative Leaders in the Digital Ecosystem Era” under Waseda University’s Graduate School of Information, Production and Systems (GSIPS). The program is aimed for those of you who are planning to study at a Graduate or Doctorate level program. In addition, this program is fully supported by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
IMPORTANT NOTES
- To apply for this special program, both application documents 1. MEXT and 2. IPS should be sent. Graduation Certificates, Degree Certificates and Transcripts must be submitted to 1. MEXT and 2. IPS respectively.
- Applicants are required to meet all qualifications stated in MEXT Application Guide and IPS Admission Guide.
MEXT
ELIGIBILITIES
- Nationals of countries recognized by the Japanese Government who are newly coming to Japan for the purpose of studying at the GSIPS,
- Born on and after April 2,1988,
- Must fulfill one of the following requirements:
- Have a bachelor’s degree or are expected to earn such degree before the designated time of arrival in September 2023,
- Have completed or who are expected to complete 16 years of school education before the designated time of arrival in September 2023,
- Are recognized by the IPS as having reached an academic level equivalent to a bachelor’s degree through an individual entrance requirements screening process and scheduled to reach age 22 before the designated time of arrival in September 2023.
- If you have graduated or are expected to graduate from a university in a country where English is not the native language, one of the following conditions must be met:
(Certificates obtained within two years are valid.)- Japanese language level: JLPT N2 or N1
- English language level: Cambridge English 160 or more, GTEC 1190 or more, IELTS 5.5 or more, TEAP 309 or more, TEAP CBT 600 or more, TOEFL iBT 72 or more, TOEIC L&R/TOEIC S&W 1560 or more
(TOEIC S&W score should be multiplied by 2.5 and added to TOEIC L&R score.)
- Has been determined by the GSIPS to be mentally and physically fit to be studying overseas,
- Must be able to arrive in Japan in early-mid September 2023,
- Successful applicants must newly obtain a “Student (ryuugaku 留学)” visa at the embassy/consulate in the country of their nationality prior to their arrival in Japan and enter Japan with the newly obtained Student visa,
(Please note that scholarship will be ceased to grant if applicants enter Japan without newly obtaining the student visa) - While studying in Japan, scholarship recipients are expected to actively be involved in their local and school communities. By doing so, they are expected to contribute to the internationalization of Japanese society and promote mutual understanding between Japan and their respective home country. After graduation, they are expected to maintain close contact with their alma mater and help improve the relations between Japan and their home country by cooperating with projects (e.g., surveys) conducted by the Japanese embassy/consulate in their home country etc.

IPS
ELIGIBILITIES (GRADUATE PROGRAM)
- Have graduated or are scheduled to graduate from a university in Japan by the entrance period that applicants wish to matriculate,
- Have received a Bachelor’s Degree from the National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation or are scheduled to receive such a degree by the entrance period that applicants wish to matriculate,
- Have completed 16 years of standard school education outside Japan or are scheduled to complete such education by the entrance period that applicants wish to matriculate,
- Have completed a more than 3 years program in a university outside Japan or are scheduled to complete such education and hold a bachelor degree by the entrance period that applicants wish to matriculate,
- Are designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology by the entrance period that applicants wish to matriculate,
- Have been enrolled at a university for more than three years (or have completed 15 years of school education overseas or are scheduled to complete such education by the entrance period that applicants wish to matriculate) and have been recognized by the GSIPS as having earned a specified number of credits with an excellent academic record,
- Have been recognized by the GSIPS as possessing academic credentials superior to those of university graduates through an individual entrance requirements screening process and are scheduled to reach 22 years of age by the entrance period that applicants wish to matriculate.
ELIGIBILITIES (DOCTORATE PROGRAM)
- Holders of a Master’s Degree, Professional Master’s Degree, or Professional Doctoral Degree in Law or those who are expected to obtain such degree by the entrance period that applicants wish to matriculate,
- Holders of a master’s degree, professional master’s degree, or an equivalent from an institution overseas or those who are expected to obtain such degree by the entrance period that applicants wish to matriculate,
- Are designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology,
- Have completed postgraduate programs and obtained a degree equivalent to a master’s degree from United Nations University or those who are expected to obtain such degree by the entrance period that applicants wish to matriculate,
- Have been recognized by the graduate school program as possessing scholastic ability equivalent to those of holders of a master’s degree, professional master’s degree or professional doctoral degree in law through an individual entrance requirements screening process and are expected to reach 24 years of age by the entrance period that applicants wish to matriculate. Those who have completed the first two years of a continuous five-year doctoral course are included.

SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship provided will be in the form of monthly allowance, travel expenses, tuition fees, and housing.
