Universitas Indonesia (UI) recently welcomed a distinguished delegation from Khalifa University, United Arab Emirates (UAE), to establish a robust strategic partnership. The high-level dialogue focused on bridging academic excellence with industrial application, exploring comprehensive collaborations in research commercialization, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and cross-border student and faculty mobility.

During the engaging discussion, UI highlighted its strong commitment to high-impact research and technological advancement, particularly within the Sciences, Engineering, and Computer Science sectors, emphasizing the strong bilateral ties between Indonesia and the UAE. In response, Khalifa University a rapidly rising institution with a dominant publication record in the Middle East showcased its flagship strengths in AI, High Technology, Energy, and Advanced Manufacturing. Khalifa University’s representatives emphasized their core institutional focus on research translation, knowledge transfer, and generating tangible societal and industrial impacts from academic outputs.
The dialogue identified powerful synergies in high-impact innovation and research downstreaming. Both institutions explored establishing joint research frameworks, collaborative startup incubation, and technology commercialization pathways, with UI strategically positioning itself as a gateway for UAE-based startups aiming to enter the Indonesian market. Furthermore, extensive academic frameworks were discussed, including the development of reciprocal joint and double degree programs at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, faculty exchanges, and the facilitation of PhD research visits through the PMDSU scheme. Specifically, UI’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) proposed targeted collaborations in climate resilience, geoscience, remote sensing, data science, and nanotechnology.
The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to elevate their global academic reputations through this strategic alliance, setting an ambitious target to fully realize concrete collaborative programs by 2027. As immediate next steps, both universities will facilitate direct faculty-to-faculty coordination, identify dedicated seed funding and joint funding mechanisms, and draft detailed action plans to finalize the formalization of the MoU and its ensuing initiatives.
