Universitas Indonesia and Mokpo National University Seek to Activate MoU Through Reciprocal Mobility and Strategic Degree Programs

Universitas Indonesia (UI) recently hosted a courtesy visit from Mokpo National University (MNU) to discuss the activation and practical implementation of their existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The dialogue focused on transitioning the agreement into actionable educational cooperation, particularly through dynamic student exchange frameworks and strategic joint degree initiatives.

The delegation from Mokpo National University was led by Prof. Dr. Sun-Kee HONG, Director of the Office of International Affairs, and was accompanied by:

  • Mr. Jin-Sol Kim – Officer, Office of International Affairs

The Universitas Indonesia delegation was represented by:

  • Fadhilah Muslim, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., DIC – Director of Internationalization of Education
  • Yunitha Fajarwati, S.Hum. – Section Head of International Partnership, Directorate for Internationalization of Education

During the meeting, UI outlined its comprehensive array of mobility opportunities, which includes student exchanges, study abroad options, short courses, and joint or dual degree programs. MNU, recognized as a global nexus for Decarbonized AI and Maritime Innovation, shared an impressive institutional overview. Operating across six campuses with strong ties to regional industries and campus clusters, MNU features a unique 4+2 degree system (combining a 4-year Bachelor’s and a 2-year Associate degree), a dedicated Korean Language Center, and an accessible Online Degree Program in Korean Studies offered at 300,000 KRW per semester.

The discussion heavily emphasized the development of Double Degree programs. MNU highlighted its successful existing partnerships in Indonesia, noting Joint Degrees with ITS in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, and Mechatronics, as well as a partnership with UNPAD in Fisheries and Marine sciences. Building on past preliminary discussions regarding a Double Degree in Korean Studies with UI, both institutions agreed that any future degree partnerships must be strictly reciprocal. UI expressed readiness to facilitate matchmaking with relevant faculties—such as the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) and the Faculty of Administrative Science (FIA)—given that MNU students have shown a strong interest in Business Management and Finance.

To effectively activate the current MoU, both parties agreed to prioritize a formal Student Mobility Agreement focusing on student exchanges and short course programs. A crucial factor identified for the success of these programs is funding; UI noted that scholarships or fee waivers for summer camps would significantly boost student participation.

As an actionable next step, UI will send its comprehensive brochures detailing non-degree and mobility programs to MNU to help identify and align the academic interests of students from both universities.
