Universitas Indonesia and the University of Sheffield Discuss Extensive Academic Collaborations and Mobility Programs

Universitas Indonesia (UI) hosted a delegation from the University of Sheffield to explore a wide array of potential academic collaborations. The meeting focused on expanding student mobility, developing joint degree programs, and strengthening research partnerships to enhance the educational ties between the two institutions.

The delegation from the University of Sheffield was led by Louise McCarthy – Director of Global Engagement, and was accompanied by:

  • Carmelita Crissy K – Country Manager Indonesia at MSW Global

The Universitas Indonesia delegation was led by Fadhilah Muslim, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., DIC – Director, Internationalization of Education and was accompanied by:

  • Yunitha Fajarwati, S.Hum. – Section Head, International Education Partnership, Directorate for Internationalization of Education

During the meeting, the University of Sheffield introduced its comprehensive academic structure, which comprises five main faculties: the Faculty of Health, Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Social Sciences, and Faculty of Arts and Humanities. They also highlighted their top-ranking subjects, specifically noting excellence in Library and Information Management, Biosciences, and Architecture.

A major focus of the discussion was on expanding student mobility and degree partnerships. Both parties explored the initiation of Joint and Dual Degree programs, including 2+2, 1+1, and 2+1 models (excluding Medicine and Dentistry), as well as Fast Track programs. To further support student exchange, they discussed Fee-paying Study Abroad opportunities with potential program fee reductions, and Short-term or Summer school programs designed for credit earning.

Addressing the technicalities of student exchange, UI noted that its students typically participate in mobility programs during their 7th semester, making it crucial to ensure course compatibility for seamless credit transfer. Sheffield shared its academic calendar, which runs from September to January and February to June, aligning well with mobility planning. Additionally, Sheffield confirmed that it recognizes final projects for Master’s and PhD programs, which opens doors for joint supervision and advanced academic integration. The collaboration will also actively support students applying through the LPDP Scholarship.

Beyond student mobility, the meeting laid the groundwork for robust research collaborations and visiting professor initiatives. Demonstrating immediate engagement, the University of Sheffield is scheduled to deliver guest lectures today at UI’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) focusing on Biosciences, the Faculty of Engineering (FT), and the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) focusing on Management. These lectures will be followed by direct discussions with the respective faculties.

To solidify these promising initiatives, both institutions agreed on concrete next steps. UI will compile and share a comprehensive list of its International Programs with Sheffield to facilitate accurate matching with interested faculties. Furthermore, a follow-up online meeting will be arranged with the Sheffield Study Abroad Team to propose and establish a formal Study Abroad Agreement, aiming to secure fee reductions and facilitate summer program exchanges.
