Universitas Indonesia (UI) held a meeting with the Embassy of Mexico to explore opportunities for strengthening academic and research collaboration between Indonesian and Mexican higher education institutions. The meeting was attended by H.E. Francisco de la Torre Galindo, Ambassador of Mexico to Indonesia, and a delegation from Universitas Indonesia led by Prof. Ir. Mahmud Sudibandriyo, M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs and attended by:

  • Fadhilah Muslim S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., DIC – Director, Internationalization of Education
  • Finda Salsabila, M. A – Head of Partnership and Hospitality, Directorate of Public Relations, Media, Government and International
  • Yunitha Fajarwati S.Hum – Section Head, International Education Partnership, Directorate for Internationalization of Education

During the discussion, Ambassador Galindo expressed Mexico’s strong interest in partnering with Universitas Indonesia, citing UI’s academic capabilities, research resources, and centers of excellence. UI was viewed as a peer institution with strong potential to become a “sister university” to leading universities in Mexico. The Ambassador emphasized the importance of building bridges of cooperation, noting the similarities between Indonesia and Mexico in terms of economic scale, national capacity, and development potential, which make collaboration both relevant and strategic.

Several collaboration initiatives were highlighted, including interest from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), which operates campuses in multiple countries, including China. The UNAM campus in China has expressed interest in establishing relations with UI. In addition, El Colegio de México (COLMEX) and the University of Nuevo León, Monterrey also conveyed their intention to explore further cooperation with Universitas Indonesia.

Proposed areas of collaboration include student mobility programs, joint research development, and the establishment of joint scholarship schemes. Both parties agreed that further discussions would be conducted, with UI providing contact persons as well as information on timelines and mechanisms for the next stages of engagement.

UI also shared that it currently maintains active Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and student exchange agreements with Tecnológico de Monterrey and Universidad Panamericana, which are valid through this year and have been implemented through short course programs and student exchanges. Ambassador Galindo requested that UI inform the Embassy should there be Mexican students studying at UI, so that they may be formally welcomed by the Embassy of Mexico.

Concluding the meeting, Universitas Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to renewing existing MoUs and proactively engaging with Mexican universities mentioned during the discussion to further explore concrete collaboration opportunities.
