Call for application for MEXT Scholarship for Research Student at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS), Japan!
The MEXT Scholarship is now open for prospective graduate students who plan to begin their studies at TUFS.

Eligibility

FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS
  • Applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1991.
  • Applicants must meet the academic requirements to enroll in a Master’s or Doctoral program in Japan (minimum 16 years of formal education).
  • Applicants must have a minimum academic grade point of 2.30 out of 3.00 (or equivalent).
  • Language proficiency requirements:
  • Japanese: JLPT N2 or higher, or
  • English: CEFR B2 or higher (e.g., TOEFL iBT ≥ 72, IELTS ≥ 5.5).
  • The intended field of study must be the same as or related to the applicant’s previous academic background.
  • Applicants must be physically and mentally healthy.
  • Applicants must be able to arrive in Japan around early October 2026.
  • Applicants must not be receiving another scholarship that conflicts with MEXT.
  • Applicants must intend to proceed to a regular degree program after the research student period.

  • MEXT Application Form (Research Student)
  • Field of Study and Research Plan
  • Letter of Recommendation (from Dean or higher authority)
  • Official academic transcript
  • Certificate of graduation or expected graduation letter
  • Copy of passport (ID page)
  • Proof of language proficiency (JLPT, TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent)
  • Certificate of health

Scholarship Coverage

  • Monthly allowance: JPY 146,000 (amount subject to change)
  • Exemption from entrance fees and tuition fees
  • Round-trip airfare to and from Japan in accordance with MEXT regulations

Scholarship Period

18 months as a non-regular research student (October 2026 – March 2028)

How to Apply:

Interested Universitas Indonesia students must submit all required documents to outbound@ui.ac.id no later than 14 January.
