Call for application for IJEP Short-Term Exchange Program (JASSO Scholarship) at Kumamoto University, Japan!
Open for Graduate (Master – S2) students who have never participated on exchange program.

Program Outline

The IJEP (International Joint Education Program for Science and Technology) Short-Term Exchange Program accepts qualified graduate students from overseas universities and offers education and research in English for up to one academic year.

Under the Environmental Leader Program, students will join a laboratory to conduct a research project under the supervision of a GSST academic advisor. They are also required to take lectures related to environmental issues and participate in a field trip to learn about natural resources and related social issues.

Eligibility

For Graduate (Master – S2) Students
  • Applicants should have an excellent academic record. Furthermore, GPA of the former grade must be superior than 2.30 based on the calculation method below. If the student does not have an academic record of the former grade, they must figure out by the former semester’s record.
  • Those who have economic difficulties to study abroad without outside financial help
  • Those who will return to their home university to continue their studies and receive their degrees or graduate the university etc. after finishing their studies in this program
  • Those who will not be receiving scholarship more than 80,000JPY per month from all other scholarship sources while studying in Japan
  • Have not completed all required credits of their study
  • Must transfer credits to UI after completing exchange program
  • Must not graduate from UI until the exchange program is completed
  • Have a strong academic performance
  • Have a strong competence in English proficiency
  • Must purchase international health insurance that meets visa and partner university requirements
  • Must have a valid passport at the time of application
  • Students who have participated or currently enrolled in a student exchange are not eligible
  • Must not be currently applying for or accepting any exchange at the time of application
  • Must comply with faculty-specific rules and regulations (if any)

Required Documents

  • Application form for Short-Term Exchange Program
  • A letter of recommendation from a professor or a research supervisor who can evaluate the applicant’s personality and ability in study and research
  • Faculty Recommendation Letter (signed by the Vice Dean for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs/ Education Manager/ Head of International Office at Faculty), must state:
  1. The faculty supports and acknowledges the offline outbound international mobility program.
  2. The student will not graduate from UI until the international mobility program is completed.
  3. Earned credits are transferable to UI.
  • Certificate of Enrollment, including information such as expected date of completion
  • Official English transcripts of academic records from each college and/or university attended, including information such as GPA and ranking
  • A Valid English Proficiency CertificateMinimum score of TOEFL iBT 71/ IELTS 6.0
  • CV & Motivation Letter
  • Written approval letter of departure from parents (following the provided format)
  • Consent letter (following the provided format)

Program Requirements

  • Research project
  • Lectures (including “Current Science and Technology in Japan” – 2 credits, and at least 3 environment-related courses)
  • Field trip
  • Midterm and final presentations
  • Final report (The students must submit a “Final Report” before finishing the program. Upon successful completion of the program, a certificate of completion will be issued by GSST)

Scholarship

  • Monthly stipend: 80,000 JPY
  • Duration: 6 or 11 months (1 month = 31 days; duration cannot be changed after acceptance)
  • Payment: Disbursed monthly to a designated bank account in Japan
  • Retraction: The scholarship may be revoked in cases of poor academic performance, serious misconduct, inappropriate behavior, or if false information is found in the application
