During the session, City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) and Universitas Indonesia (UI) presented an overview of their shared academic goals, focusing heavily on advancing postgraduate studies and international collaborations. Building upon a recent visit by UI’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) to CityUHK on 21 April 2026, the discussion highlighted a strong mutual desire to expand their collaborative footprint. The meeting served as a strategic platform to deepen existing ties and explore a wide array of progressive educational frameworks between the two institutions.
A major focus of the discussion centered on establishing comprehensive degree partnerships. Both parties actively explored the initiation of a 1+1 Master’s Dual/Joint Degree between FMIPA and CityUHK’s School of Energy and Environment (SEE). To further enhance student mobility, FMIPA expressed a strong interest in developing a Fast Track Program bridging Bachelor’s to Master’s degrees, alongside undergraduate exchange and summer programs under the Department of Sciences. Emphasizing robust research capabilities, UI’s Graduate School of Sustainable Development (SPPB) highlighted its dedicated research centers focusing on water sensitivity, energy waste management, electric vehicles (EV), renewable energy, and climate change.
The collaboration is designed to provide substantial benefits and accessibility for students through robust funding mechanisms. The institutions identified the LPDP, Hong Kong VFS, and Hong Kong government Scholarships as key financial avenues to support candidates in the Dual/Joint Degree programs. Beyond student mobility, SPPB outlined ambitious plans to initiate joint degrees, joint supervision, joint publications, and international joint workshops. Furthermore, both institutions laid the groundwork for future Ph.D. program collaborations between FMIPA and CityUHK’s College of Science.
To maximize the impact of this partnership, the delegation also explored cutting-edge technological collaborations. Professor Ye WEI from CityUHK’s Department of Data Science expressed a keen interest in fostering targeted joint initiatives specifically under the domains of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Biostatistics.
The meeting concluded positively, with both institutions agreeing on concrete actionable next steps. FMIPA and SEE are currently in the process of collecting and discussing curriculum mapping, with a formalized plan to sign the Agreement of Intent (AoI) for the Joint Degree on 25 June. Additionally, to propel the technological initiatives forward, a follow-up online meeting will be arranged specifically with UI’s Faculty of Computer Science (Fasilkom) to dive deeper into the proposed AI and Biostatistics collaborations.
