Every year the Japanese Government’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) offers a University Recommendation scholarship. The scholarship allows Juntendo University to nominate international applicants from partner universities the opportunity to become Juntendo University research students who may potentially enter Juntendo University Graduate School.
DEFINITION OF “RESEARCH STUDENTS”
Those who are enrolled in a master’s course, a doctoral course, or a professional graduate course at a graduate school, or who are conducting research in a specialized field at an undergraduate department, graduate school, institute attached to a university, etc. to complete the course.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CONDITIONS
- Eligibility
This scholarship is for international students who are newly coming to Japan for graduate-level research. Applicants must be outstanding students who have a GPA of 2.30 or above, based on MEXT’s 3.0 scale*, and competent enough to be expected to maintain the equivalent level throughout the scholarship.
(a) Applicants who have already graduated from a university’s undergraduate program: a GPA of the undergraduate program;
(b) Applicants who have already completed a degree program at a graduate school: a GPA of the graduate program;
(c) Applicants who are pursuing an undergraduate degree: a GPA of the undergraduate program;
(d) Applicants who are pursuing a graduate school degree: a GPA of the degree program at the graduate school. - Nationality
Applicants must have the nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan. An applicant who has Japanese nationality at the time of application is not eligible. - Age
Applicants, in principle, must have been born on or after April 2, 1989. - Academic Background
Applicants must satisfy the conditions for admission to either a master’s or doctoral course at a Japanese graduate school. (Applicants who will certainly satisfy the conditions by the time of enrollment are eligible.) - Field of Study
Applicants should apply for the field of study they majored in at university or its related field. - Language Proficiency
Applicants must have either the following Japanese or English language abilities.
Japanese: Must have passed JLPT N2 or above.
English: Must have obtained CEFR B2 level or above (p.13) English language proficiency exam scores. The individual scores for each section of the test are also equal to or greater than CEFR B2 level.
The test must have been taken within two years of the application deadline. - Health
Applicants must be in good physical and mental condition to study in Japan. - Arrival in Japan
Applicants must be able to arrive in Japan within two weeks before or after October 1, 2024. - Visa Requirement
An applicant shall, in principle, newly obtain a “Student” visa at the Japanese diplomatic mission located in the applicant’s country of nationality, and enter Japan with the residence status of “Student.”
PERIOD OF SCHOLARSHIP
*The start and/or end month, as well as the period, are subject to change.
The scholarship period will last from September or October 2024 until the end of March 2026.

① Research Students (non-regular students): 143,000 JPY per month
② Regular students enrolled in master’s courses: 144,000 JPY per month
③ Regular students enrolled in doctoral courses: 145,000 JPY per month

APPLICATION DOCUMENTS
- The documents must be written in Japanese or English, or a translation in either of these languages should be attached.
- The documents must be typed on A4 size paper.
- The selected applicants must submit the original documents or certified copies of the documents during the designated submission period.
- The submitted documents will not be returned.
- Applications cannot be accepted unless all the application documents are fully and accurately completed.
