Sato Yo International Scholarship Foundation (SISF) is awarded to students who have
– Demonstrated academic excellence and commitment to further their education.
– Dedication to promoting cross-cultural understanding and international exchange with Japan and other countries.
– Dedication to contribute to society through community involvement and volunteer activities.
– A strong motivation to give back to society.
Eligibility (Undergraduates)
- UI student with active status.
- Students should be at the minimum, in their 3rd semester at UI, at the time of application.
- Have not registered 144 credits at UI (Including credits on the last semester at UI before departing for exchange) by the time of application.
- Mandatory to transfer credits exchange period to UI.
- Will not graduate from UI until the exchange period is completed.
- GPA min. 3.2 (all major)
- English Proficiency Standard:
– TOEFL iBT min. 80
– IELTS min. 6.5 - Mandatory to purchase International Insurance that covers COVID-19 treatment
- Mandatory to have a passport before applying.
- Students who have previously participated/enrolled in any international program from International Office UI or any other opportunities including IISMA are NOT eligible.
- Not currently applying for another exchange or study abroad with a fee-paying program, e.g.: IISMA.
- Students who are strongly committed to cross-cultural exchange will participate in bimonthly networking events in Tokyo hosted by the Foundation. The events will be held in Japanese.
- Students who have a clear purpose and plan for studying in Japan, and who will benefit most from the exchange.
- Students who will not be receiving any other scholarship or study grant during exchange.
- Students who desire to study Japanese and Japanese culture.
- Students who will arrive in Japan by the end of September will be enrolled at the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) for a one-year (both A1A2 and S1S2 terms) exchange.
- Students who do not have Ph.D. degree.
- Students who can communicate in Japanese* or English.
- Students who will support the exchange and network-building activities of the Foundation positively as a SATOM** after the scholarship period. ** SATOM is the name given to alumni of SISF.
*Japanese proficiency at the time of application is not required: However, the scholarship recipients are expected to acquire a basic, conversational level of Japanese during their exchange at UTokyo.

Scholarship
- Number of recipients: 1
- Amount:
– JPY 120,000 per month (Payment calculated by the week for arrival and departure months)
– Roundtrip airfare
– Lump-sum exchange grant: JPY 100,000
– One-way ground transportation expense from the arrival airport to the nearest station to accommodation. - Duration:
A minimum of 8 months and a maximum of 12 months. (Will be terminated upon completion of the exchange program.) *Maximum until 2025 July - Method of payment:
Bimonthly (JPY 240,000) bank transfer to the recipient’s Japanese bank account.

- Statement letter of willingness not to leave the country if the faculty does not give permission

*A recommendation letter can be provided by your Faculty
Selection and Result Announcement
- UTokyo conducts pre-screening of applicants and recommends its top selections to SISF, and SISF makes its final selection.
- SISF should inform UTokyo of the result before the middle of June.
- The recipients must attend the formal award ceremony scheduled in November 2024 in Tokyo.
Code of Conduct
Recipients of the SISF shall abide by the following rules and requirements:
- Scholarship recipients must be diligent in one’s studies and research.*
- Scholarship recipients must attend events held by the Foundation to promote cultural exchange.
- Scholarship recipients must submit documents and reports such as the monthly report as required by the Foundation within the designated deadline.
- When leaving the country, permission by the Foundation must be obtained and the recipient must return within the designated period.
- Scholarship recipients must not be receiving financial support from any other organization.
- Scholarship recipients must obey Japanese laws and keep up with the social order.
If a scholarship recipient fails to comply with the rules and conditions as set forth by the Foundation, the scholarship will be forfeited. If there is serious misconduct either intentionally or negligently by the recipient that damages the reputation of the scholarship program, the Foundation reserves the right to request a return of the scholarship awarded.
[*For academic performance, the scholarship will be fortified if (1) the recipient’s academic supervisor deems him/her unfit for the continuation of course/research work, (2) the academic record at UTokyo is unsatisfactory, or (3) the recipient takes a leave of absence or transfer to other academic institutions during the exchange at UTokyo.]
